First Student Soldiers
During the Civil War, over 30 Michigan State Normal School students served in the 17th Michigan Infantry, known as the “Stonewall Regiment.” Their bravery in the Battle of South Mountain helped stop the first Confederate invasion of Union soil. The regiment’s students included Captain Gabriel Campbell and other officers, all graduates of the Normal School. A commemorative plaque is installed on the Pray-Harrold building’s exterior to honor these student soldiers and remember their sacrifice and pivotal role in shaping history.

Three of a Kind: Donors Who Make a Difference
What do NASCAR legend Jack Roush, Discount Tire founder Bruce T. Halle, and former EMU professor Dr. Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur have in common? They’re among the many generous donors who’ve shaped Eastern Michigan University’s future. Roush, an EMU alum, fueled innovation by funding a math lab for STEM students and equipping an automotive lab. Halle, also an alum, gave a substantial gift to build the university library, creating a hub for learning and research. Dr. Upshur, a former history and philosophy professor, left a gift to launch a center for civic education, nurturing the next generation of engaged citizens. These three exemplify the thousands of supporters who have invested in EMU. Their generosity helps ensure EMU remains a place of opportunity and excellence.
Zebra Stripes
In 1914, EMU’s own Lloyd Olds changed the game—literally—by inventing the now-iconic black-and-white referee shirt. His creation gave officials their signature look, ensuring they’d never blend in with the players again. Today, the zebra stripes remain a symbol of authority in sports worldwide.

Anyone Look Familiar?

Ring My Bell
Silent for decades, the 700-pound bell from Old Main, a relic from Eastern’s past, now stands proudly in McKenny Hall’s main hallway. Purchased in 1874 for Michigan State Normal College, the bell once rang from the Conservatory of Music and later Old Main, which was demolished in 1948. Lost to time and rediscovered in a basement in 2013, the bell has been refurbished, symbolizing Eastern Michigan University’s enduring legacy.

Jazzed Up and Amplified
WEMU 89.1, one of the finest public radio stations in the country, has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1971. Starting as a small, two-hour-a-day station with a 10-mile range, WEMU grew into a jazz powerhouse and an NPR affiliate with a reach that extends to Ohio and Canada. Significant milestones included a switch to an all-jazz format in 1977 and a broadcast power boost in 1992, cementing WEMU’s status as a regional favorite. WEMU has been named “Station of the Year” by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for two consecutive years.

A Mascot Is Born
Over the years, EMU students have cheered under three banners: the Normalites, the Hurons, and today’s Eagles. The switch from Hurons to Eagles in 1991 marked a new chapter, with “Green Hornets” and “Express” also considered for the nickname. Mascot Swoop debuted a few years later, hatching from an egg that cracked open on the basketball court. The big reveal didn’t go as planned—students initially thought they were seeing a duck. However, Swoop soon found its place in EMU tradition, winning over students and fans.

A Window on History
As you enter Pease Auditorium, you’ll find two striking stained glass panels dedicated to Josephine Dolsen Pease, wife of Fredric H. Pease, the esteemed music department chair at Michigan State Normal College. Originally adorning St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the panels now grace the auditorium’s lobby, honoring Josephine’s memory and the couple’s deep connection to the university.

The Forensics Team
Since its inception, EMU’s Forensics team has been a powerhouse in the art of speech and debate. With 11 national championships and a consistent ranking among the top 10 collegiate programs in the country, the team excels at using communication to inform, persuade, and inspire. Since their first national win in 1973, they’ve continued to uphold a legacy of excellence that speaks for itself.

Hollywood, Broadway, and Beyond
EMU alums have earned some serious hardware. Sheryl James (BA73) brought home a Pulitzer Prize for feature writing, while James Bolosh (BS91) took a Tony Award for co-producing Broadway’s Best Play “Stereophonic.” And on the small screen, Sally Young (BS72) nabbed a Primetime Emmy for her work as a co-producer on the hit TV show Modern Family.

Times Have Changed
Imagine being locked in by 7 p.m. on weeknights and 10 p.m. on weekends! In the 1860s, that was the rule at Michigan Normal School, with expulsion on the line for those who broke curfew twice. Local students, however, got a pass from these strict hours, making commuting the early hack for more freedom. The curfew crept up to 11 p.m., but it wasn’t until 1972 that “hours” were finally retired for good.

Mad Cool
When NFL Pro Bowler Maxx Crosby returned to Eastern Michigan University, he did more than relive glory days. With a $1 million gift, Maxx and his wife Rachel Crosby, a fellow EMU alum, spearheaded the transformation of the football field, resulting in the newly minted Crosby Field.

EMU’s Fermentation Science students took their brewing game to new heights by snagging the title of Grand National Champion at the 2024 U.S. Open College Beer Championship. With three gold medals and a bronze for beers like “Tonsure” and “Keith’s Kitchen Sink,” these future brewmasters proved they can craft world-class beers—even with leftover grains.
