THE MAIN THING

Old Main wasn’t just a building; it was the heart of what was then Michigan State Normal School. Classrooms, a library, administrative offices, and even an observatory once filled its halls. Dedicated in 1852, it was rebuilt after a fire in 1859, expanded multiple times, and served as the hub of academic life. By 1948, its legacy gave way to a growing campus, laying the foundation for today’s Eastern Michigan University.

Explore how each space within Old Main played a vital role in shaping the student experience at the heart of our early campus.
