FROM THE PRESIDENT
The Work We Share
From students to alumni, the strength of Eastern has always come from those who choose to show up—and move it forward

When I returned to Eastern Michigan University this spring, I came home with a strong sense of connection and a clear sense of responsibility.
In a short time, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with hundreds of students. They talk about their goals (careers, graduate school, the lives they want to build). They also share their day-to-day experiences—how we support them, where we can improve, and what they need to succeed.
Those conversations reinforce something simple. Our work is to help people transform their lives into whatever they want them to be.
And to do that well, we have to listen. Then we have to act.
That expectation is not new at Eastern. Our responsibility now is to meet it—every day.
Recently, I participated in a pinning ceremony for our forensics team, a tradition shaped in part by Judy Sturgis Hill, EMU’s first national champion and long-time support force for the program. When that EMU pin is placed on a student’s lapel, it represents a commitment, not just to personal excellence, but to unapologetic pride in an institution that was here before us and will be here after us.
What stood out most for me was the sense of connection. Alumni return to that ceremony because it still matters. Students feel the history and understand they are part of something bigger than themselves, even if they can’t quite name it.
That kind of connection matters, especially now.
Higher education is facing important questions about value, access, and impact. At Eastern, we welcome those questions. They push us to stay focused on what matters most: the student experience and the outcomes that follow.
But institutions like ours don’t move forward on mission alone. They move forward because people choose to stay connected. To mentor. To advocate. To invest time, energy, and resources in the next generation.
That has always been part of Eastern’s story.
Whether you’re engaging with today’s students, supporting our programs, or simply carrying the impact of this institution into your work and community, you are part of that story.
We intend to be a “first choice” university. That’s not something we declare once. It’s something we earn every day through every detail of the experience we deliver. And it’s work that belongs to all of us.
I’m proud to be your president.
And I’m focused on the work ahead.
