FROM THE PRESIDENT
When Fashion is More Than Clothes
Like many of you, I like to add a little flair to my work attire. I enjoy wearing socks with lively and colorful patterns to accent my suits and chinos. (University presidents like to have a little fun too, you know.)
It’s been said that “clothes make the man.” But with all due respect to Shakespeare, a pair of socks, a necktie or any other garment represents just one side of an individual’s personality.
Our Q&A feature in this issue about Eastern’s comprehensive Fashion Marketing Innovation program reinforces this idea. While the program name might lead you to believe that the curriculum focuses solely on the fashion industry, it actually involves much more. As EMU Professor of Apparel, Textiles and Merchandising Julie Becker explains, the discipline encompasses technology, mathematics, engineering—even a bit of psychology.
The program has helped propel numerous graduates to successful careers. Among them is Xavier Jones. As you’ll see in his story, Xavier has not only built a successful career as a footwear designer for Nike, he also shares his experiences and knowledge with the next generation.
Speaking of generational legacies, you’ll also read about alumnus Jawan M. Jackson, who leveraged his years of experience as an entertainer to become a member of Motown’s legendary Temptations. I was personally thrilled to visit with Jawan when he recently returned to campus. I hope his story will inspire you as well.
Just as Julie, Xavier and Jawan are winners in their fields, so is alumnus Tom Saylor. His story shows how he transferred his success in athletics to the business world—and set impressive records along the way.
You’ll also find other fine articles in this issue, including thoughts from recently retired faculty who share parting words as they reflect on their distinguished careers.
And with that, I’ll part for now so you can begin enjoying this issue!
